During the spring of 2008 Angela Meiers was teaching one of the classes I was taking for my masters degree. She talked about blogs, Twitter, social bookmarking, RSS feeds and probably tons of other things. She is brilliant, and energetic, and passionate, and everything sounded very exciting. At this point in time, I didn't even have a personal Facebook account. I didn't really have any clue what a blog was, and I'd never even heard of Twitter. Although I still knew almost nothing, now I was beginning to at least realize how much I didn't know.
I had my first baby in the fall that year. In the spring I started to think that I needed to at least begin to explore more with technology. If for no other reason, I knew I would need to know something about technology in order to be a good parent down the road. That's when I started a Facebook account. I played tons of Farmville and Mafia Wars. I became Facebook friends with people I vaguely remembered from high school. I got my mom to create an account so we could play Scrabble. I was having fun.
The next year I started a Twitter account. I know this because Twitter will tell you when your account was created. I followed people and unfollowed people. Everything appeared to be complete gibberish to me.

I'm cracking up! It was about the same time that I started my first blog and my Facebook account. I got way into Farmville for a while! I had Facebook friends who were only friends for Farmville. The year I decorated my farm for Christmas and not my house, I knew I had to quit. I went cold turkey that January! I can hardly wait for Part Two!
ReplyDeleteI started out with listservs in the 90s and then webpages, blogging in 2006. My cousin got me back on Facebook for a family network and then took off. I never did Farmville -- possibly because I used to do real farm work. Then I did community pages and ones for organizations. I still prefer blogging though

ReplyDeleteomg I'm LOLing at your tweet and #bunchofwordsnospaces - That's what I totally thought too! It is an art to read the Twitter feed - but so amazing once you figure it all out!
ReplyDeleteI "thought" I was so technical, but now I know it's something I need to work on. LOL, I can remember when i was first learning "DIAL UP" and I would cry. I couldn't remember the steps it would take to log on.
