Five for Friday Feb. 27

fiveforfriday2_thumb[3]

I put out some new math centers this week. These two are working on Mental Math Monster Task Cards. It's so great to see this collaboration between kids.

I love it when Opera Iowa comes to visit! It's my favorite special event of the year! This year they performed a version of the Three Billy Goats Gruff.

I had such a break through with one of my students using these blending roads. We drove a little bus down the road and put the sounds together to decode. I don't think this little guy has ever decoded a word before, but he read the whole stack!

We read the Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown. We did a shared writing using the pattern from the book, then the kids got to do their own. We'll cut these apart and assemble them with the topic sentence and concluding sentence in the right places. I set it up this way so they could see how the topic sentence and the concluding sentence were almost exactly the same.

We've been playing a math game with Who Stole the Cookies From the Cookie Jar during the activity portion of morning meeting. The first couple days I gave them the equations and I called out the numbers. Yesterday they had the numbers and had to listen for the equation that was equal to their number. Next week we'll break out the subtraction.

Five for Friday

fiveforfriday2_thumb[3]

We had some Valentine's fun with these 120 chart mystery pictures from Mrs. Thompson's Treasures.

We learned about where our food comes from. These little Welcome Books are fantastic. They are easy to read, and they have nice examples of text features.
After reading From Tomatoes to Ketchup, I asked the kids to recall the steps involved in making Ketchup. As they recalled, I typed in Power Point. This gave me a chance to model/explain inserting a text box and changing the font size. After a few steps had been recalled, I asked the class to fix the sequence. When we did this, I had a chance to model/explain cutting and pasting. (They were amazed.) Once the whole thing was finished, we read it together. It turned out to be a really great lesson, and the kids asked me to put their work on our class blog so they could show their parents at home. Sometimes we make lessons with technology so fancy with all the bells and whistles. This was such a simple, practical, and authentic integration of technology..

This is what we were doing during reading centers. I put this up on our class blog as well, and the kids were very excited. This will give me something to talk about at conferences next week. Since I haven't been in the classroom for 12 weeks, I'm a bit nervous about conferences. I wish I didn't have to hide the faces of the two cuties buddy reading. They were doing an awesome job!

Check out this little poet! I was so impressed!

Five For Friday

fiveforfriday2_thumb[3]

Many thanks to Kacey for hosting this fun linky.

I've been busy updating my store, and my products, and I ended up making a new blog button. I don't really have any idea what I'm doing, but I like this more.

I follow Laura Numeroff on Twitter, and her posts are pretty funny sometimes, so I retweeted one, and the next morning I saw this!

I know groceries aren't exciting, but it was so much work to get them all to fit in my car that I felt a picture was in order. For all you single people out there--this it looks like to buy groceries for 4 people when you go out. You'd think it would last a while, but I actually had to go back to the store that same say. #firstworldproblems

Valentine's cuteness.

I've been going back and giving my products some love, and now I need some help. I have 20 free products in my store, but none of them have more than 7 ratings. :(

If you have one of my freebies, I'd love for you to go back and rate it.  When a freebie gets 20 ratings, I will make a paid item free for an entire day. Click on the freebie fun sign to see all my freebies, and be sure to follow me for updates on freebie fun.
